New director takes helm at UNM’s BBER

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Jeffrey Mitchell has been named the new director of the University of New Mexico Bureau of Business and Economic Research.

Mitchell succeeds Lee Reynis, who retired as director but remains at BBER as a research professor of economics.

Mitchell joined BBER in 2003 as a senior research scientist. He studied community- and arts and culture-based economic development, nonprofit strategic planning, affordable housing and broadband access economic impacts.

He has overseen data collection and model development for BBER’s state-level economic forecast since 2010.

Mitchell was on the faculties of Clark University in Worcester, Mass., New Mexico State University and at UNM before joining BBER. He was a Fulbright Scholar in Venezuela and an international economist with Chase Econometrics.

He earned economics and political science degrees at the University of Pennsylvania and a doctorate degree in geography from Clark.
