Il Vicino Brewery becoming Canteen Brewhouse

CanteenBrewhousesubmitALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — One of the most recognizable names in the Albuquerque craft beer scene is changing.

Il Vicino Brewing will become Canteen Brewhouse effective this week in an effort to give the beer operation an identity separate from the local wood-fired pizza restaurant that spawned it more than 20 years ago.

“It has its own following in the beer world — it has its own following that has nothing to do with pizza,” said Eric Martinez, who does marketing for Il Vicino and Canteen. “We wanted it to have its own identity completely.”

Il Vicino won its first Great American Beer Festival medal in 1995 and has added 10 more since then, plus seven World Beer Cup medals.

Aside from the name and logo, things will remain the same at what’s been known as the Il Vicino Brewery Canteen at 2381 Aztec NE.  Head brewer Brady McKeown — who has been involved since former Il Vicino partner Tom Hennessy started making beer about 20 years ago — remains in charge.

The change takes effect this week — timed to coincide with the 2014 Great American Beer Festival in Colorado.

“They’re going to head to the festival this week with new logos, new banners and do the big announcement to the beer world,” Martinez said.

Il Vicino, owned by Tom White, Greg Atkin and Rick Post, has four New Mexico pizzerias as well as locations in Colorado and Kansas.
