University of New Mexico and Los Alamos High graduate Alex Kirk hit two free throws with 2.7 seconds left to ice a 98-93 win for the Cleveland Cavaliers over the Indiana Pacers in an NBA preseason game Wednesday night in Cincinnati.
Kirk scored eight points on 3-of-6 shooting and 2-of-2 from the free throw line to go along with four rebounds in 17 minutes.
At one point, after a couple missed shots that Kirk stuck with and eventually scored on, several players on the Cavaliers bench jumped to their feet and even LeBron James was seen celebrating the play. Former Cavaliers star and current television analyst Austin Carr praised Kirk’s play, adding after the basket, “Big Fella! Staying with it!”
On Tuesday, Kirk also scored eight points and hit all four of his free throws and had three rebounds, a steal and two blocked shots in 21 minutes of a 106-100 win over the Milwaukee Bucks.
Kirk, who went undrafted in June but played in NBA Summer League for the Cavs before signing a two-year contract with the team in July, is one of 18 players on the team’s training camp roster. The Cavs must cut the roster to 15 in time for the regular season opener on Oct. 30.
