UNM police arrest man in sexual attack

unmpoliceALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — University of New Mexico police apprehended a suspect accused of sexually attacking a woman on the main campus early Friday afternoon.

A female student reported that she was walking through a parking lot off Girard near student housing when a man grabbed her around the waist and touched her between her legs. She screamed and he ran off, heading toward the student residence Casa Del Rio.

The woman immediately called university police and walked toward a nearby fire station, keeping police on the line. Within minutes, UNMPD officers, using a description given by the victim, searched the area and apprehended the suspect a short time later.

The man is not believed to be a student at UNM.

“Thanks to the victim’s quick action and officers’ rapid response, we were able to catch the suspect right away,” said Lt. Larry Bitsoih of UNMPD.

The victim did not report being injured in the incident.

The attack occurred in “R” parking lot near Onate dorms, southeast of Alvarado dorms and north of Coronado dorms around 1 p.m. The victim described the suspect as a white male wearing a gray shirt and blue jeans.

“We have not had any other reports of attacks like this recently, but we are asking anyone who might have been a victim or who witnessed an incident to please let us know,” Bitsoih said. Anyone with information is asked to contact the UNMPD at 277-2241 or
