Suspect in vehicle thefts arrested

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A hunt for a man wanted in connection with the theft of two vehicles ended with a bite from an Albuquerque police dog Tuesday afternoon as he ran through the yard of a Northeast Heights home, according to APD spokesman Tanner Tixier.

Police arrested Israel Tijeria, 33, about 2 p.m. after searching neighborhoods near Indian School and Chelwood Park.

The hunt began when police attempted to serve warrants for Israel Tijeria and his brother, Reyes Tijeria, at a house in the 1700 block of Kirby where a stolen motorcycle and another stolen vehicle were found.

Police captured Reyes Tijeria near the vehicles, but his brother fled. Police then set up a perimeter in the area around Morrow and Algodones, north of Indian School and west of Chelwood Park.

Police used a K-9 unit to search houses in the area. A police dog stopped Israel Tijeria by biting him as he ran outside a house on Euclid, between Paisano and Chelwood Park, Tixier said.

The motorcycle was a Kawasaki Ninja stolen about three weeks ago, according to a relative of the owner. Tixier did not have information on the other stolen vehicle.
