Rio Rancho Police say a suspicious man they caught with a baseball bat in his pants has admitted to two armed robberies last week.
Wayne Allen Decker, 47, of Rio Rancho, is charged with two counts of armed robbery, two counts of assault with intent to commit a violent felony, two counts of possession of a deadly weapon during a robbery, felony possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful concealed carrying of a deadly weapon.
Friday, the Rio Rancho Police Department asked for help identifying and locating a subject suspected in an armed robbery at Gamestop and an attempted armed robbery at KFC earlier in the week.
Late Saturday afternoon, an officer spoke to Decker after noticing he matched the description of an outstanding wanted felon, according to an RRPD news release. The officer questioned Decker and, having no reason to detain him, released him.
Several hours later, employees at Walgreens at Southern and Unser boulevards requested that police check a suspicious person inside the business. Officers found and interviewed Decker.
While securing Decker during the interview process, they found a baseball bat in his pants, and he had heroin, according to police.
Due to the circumstances, detectives were notified. During subsequent interviews, Decker confessed to the robberies earlier in the week, according to the release.
Decker was booked into the Sandoval County Detention Center.
“The department wishes to thank those who contacted us with any information regarding the violent crimes that Decker has been charged with,” the release said.
