Rio Rancho Council Approves Changes To Sign Ordinance

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Changes approved by Rio Rancho City Council this week will make it easier for businesses to put off-premises signs.

This will help businesses located off the beaten path promote their products and services to a wider audience, said Councilor Michael Williams.

Councilors voted 5-1 to approve the changes at the second and final reading of the ordinance on Wednesday.

Councilor Tim Crum, who voted against, said he was opposed to a host of new sign-related fees.

Councilors voted on a separate resolution that included the new fees such as a $10 storage and retrieval fee for signs that get blown down or otherwise displaced.

Businesses would have to pay $300 for an off-premiseĀ  digital sign permit plus a $200 annual review fee.

Crum, who voted against the resolution, called it unfriendly toward businesses.
