ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A town-hall meeting over the weekend produced a new name for an old neighborhood.
City Councilor Rey Garduño and neighborhood leaders say they want the area stretching from the fairgrounds to Kirtland Air Force Base to be known as the “International District.” The area picked up a derogatory nickname over the years — the “War Zone” — and Garduño wants to put that in the past.
About 50 people gathered at the Cesar Chavez Community Center over the weekend to discuss what to name the area. The “international” name seems to fit, given that the area is among the most diverse culturally in Albuquerque and features specialty grocery stores and restaurants.
We’ll just have to see if the new name catches on.
