Garduño wins election as ABQ council president

reyALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — City Councilor Rey Garduño will serve as council president over the next year.

His colleagues elected him unanimously at the beginning of Monday’s meeting.

Garduño is a Democrat whose district includes the university area and much of the Southeast Heights. He’s a frequent presence at community marches and similar events.

Brad Winter, a Republican from the Northeast Heights, will serve as vice president, and Klarissa Peña, a Democrat from the West Side, will serve as chairwoman of the council’s budget committee. They were also chosen unanimously on Monday.

The council president presides over meetings and sometimes serves as an unofficial spokesman of sorts.

Councilor Ken Sanchez, a West Side Democrat, has served as president over the last year. He will preside over tonight’s meeting, then hand the gavel over to Garduño.

Democrats hold a 5-4 majority on the council.
