Bernalillo Gets Emergency Water Supplies From Rio Rancho

A problem with the main town well forced Bernalillo to activate a recently completed emergency connection to get water from Rio Rancho this morning.

Acting Town Administrator Maria Rinaldi said engineers suspect a fault with a submersible pump at the bottom of Well 4 located near the Walmart store on N.M. 528.

When the problem was discovered, Rinaldi said,  the town began using a backup well close to U.S. 550 on the west side of town for several hours before activating the emergency connection with the Rio Rancho water supply.

The backup well does not have sufficient capacity to supply the town’s needs which have been averaging around 1.5 million to 1.7 million gallons per day this month.

The emergency connection near¬† the Sandoval County Judicial Complex off N.M. 528 provides for Rio Rancho water to feed directly into Bernalillo’s distribution system, Rinaldi said.

She did not have an estimate of when Well 4 would be functioning.

Bernalillo approved a memorandum of understanding with the city of Rio Rancho a couple of months ago which allowed the town to install a connection to the city’s water system to provide emergency backup water supplies.

Under the agreement, the city will bill the town for any water used.
