In Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, University of New Mexico senior golfer Gavin Green shot a 3-under 69 on Friday and moved into a tie for third place after three rounds of the PGM Panasonic Open Malaysia Tournament of Champions.
Green, the No. 7 collegiate golfer in the U.S. as ranked by Golfweek.com/Sagarin and the No. 1 amateur in Malaysia, enters Saturday‘s final round of the Asian Tour professional event at the Templer Park Country Club at 6-under 210 (71-70-69). He is tied with Thailand’s Wisut Artjanawat.
Green trails leader Danny Chia by eight strokes. Chia shot a 5-under 67 on Friday and sits at 14-under 202. Chia leads Singapore’s Mardan Mamat by seven strokes.
Chia and Green are the only two players in the tournament field of 29 to shoot under par in each of the first three rounds. A victory would be worth approximately $11,200 to Chia.
Green qualified for the Tournament of Champions after winning the PGM Vascory Templer Park Championship by 11 strokes with a 26-under 262. He is the winningest Lobo in school history with six individual collegiate titles.
