New Mexico Space Grant Consortium awards graduate fellowships, undergraduate scholarships

LAS CRUCES — On Nov. 24, 2014, the New Mexico Space Grant Consortium at New Mexico State University awarded 16 fellowships and scholarships at three New Mexico universities, distributing $140,000 to students at NMSU, the University of New Mexico and the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology.

The New Mexico Space Grant Consortium is a member of the Congressionally-funded National Space Grant College Scholarship and Fellowship Program which is administered by NASA. NMSGC fellowships and scholarships are competitively awarded based on application information, faculty recommendation, GPA, the research project, and NASA’s Mission.

New Mexico Space Grant Consortium is located at NMSU. Those receiving the fellowships and scholarships are:

NMSU

* Ethan Dederick of Highlands Ranch, Colorado. and a Ph.D. student at NMSU was awarded $10,000 for his research titled “JIVE: Jovian Interiors from Velocimetry Experiment.”

* Neda Nourabadi of Las Cruces is a Ph.D. student at NMSU and was awarded $10,000 for her research titled “The role of oxygen availability and pH variation on the bacterial stress response necessary for the environmental persistence.”

* Kathryn Steakley of Las Cruces and a Ph.D. student at NMSU was awarded $10,000 for her research titled “Investigating Convective Vortices and Dust Lifting at Gale Crater.”

* Westin Ball of Santa Teresa and a junior at NMSU, was awarded $5,000 for his research titled “Small Appliance Inventory — Energy Consumption Analysis.”

* Dakota Burrow of Las Cruces and a junior at NMSU was awarded $5,000 for his research titled “Mechanical Leg Exoskeleton for Reduced Gravity Simulation.”

* Joshua Flores of Las Cruces is a junior at NMSU and was awarded $5,000 for his research titled “Integrating PASA on a Climbing Robot.”

* Brian Patterson of Las Cruces is a Master’s student at NMSU and was awarded $10,000 for his research titled “Low Cost Solution Methods for Processed Metal Oxide Coatings.”

* Jason Shelby of Las Cruces is a Master’s student at NMSU and was awarded $10,000 for his research titled “Optimized Geometry Heat Exchanger.”

UNM

* Nguyen Phan of Albuquerque is a Ph.D. student at UNM and was awarded $10,000 for his research titled “Development of Detectors for X-ray Polarimetry and Dark Matter Detection.”

* Alison Santos of West Brookfield, Massachusetts, is a Ph.D. student at UNM and was awarded $10,000 for her research, “Examination of an Exotic Igneous Lithology within Martian Meteorite NWA 7034.”

* Elisa Borowski of Albuquerque is a Master’s student at UNM and was awarded $10,000 for her research titled “Engineering Viscoelastic Behavior of Deployable FRP Composites Using Nanoparticles.”

* David Lidsky of Albuquerque is a Ph.D. student at UNM and was awarded $10,000 for his research “Design, Fabrication and Characterization of Infrared Superlattice Avalanche Photodiodes.”

* Corbin Wilhelmi of Albuquerque is a Ph.D. student at UNM and was awarded $10,000 for his research “Multi-Robot Cooperative Intelligence for Selective Search and Exploration Applications on Extra-Terrestrial Surfaces.”

NMIMT

* James Price of Socorro is a senior at the NMIMT and was awarded $5,000 for his research titled “Probing Massive Star Formation Environments with Multi-wavelength Observations.”

* Mary Anderson of Socorro is a Master’s student at NMIMT and was awarded $10,000 for her research titled “Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Thermal Effects on Electro-Mechanical Impedance Structural Health Monitoring in Space Environment.”

* Kevin Reed of Farmington is a junior at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and was awarded $5,000 for his research titled “From Afghanistan to Space: Designing a novel microfluidic assay system to diagnose and stage protein energy malnutrition.”
