SANTA FE, N.M. — A modern spin on the general store has come to Santa Fe.
Erin Wade, chef/owner of Vinaigrette salad bistro, has opened Modern General at 637 Cerrilos Road, next door to her restaurant. The store offers everyday home items and food, with some more exotic versions, such as raw juices, an Austrian mill with a stone grinder, and bulk organic personal care products.
It includes an open kitchen and cafe menu, serving breakfast items such as English muffins, egg strata, granola and fruit, and pastries, such as Czech kolache. Smoothies, green and fruit juices, and wheatgrass shots also will be offered.
Organic and heirloom wheat and gluten-free flours will be sold in bulk. Organic, sustainable and eco-friendly values are stressed in the product and menu selections, according to a news release.
“We not only want to be the go-to for trusted items and daily needs, but a gathering place for friends and family — much like the historic general store,” Wade said in the news release. “You can go to buy some household staples, but also relax and have a coffee with friends…
“We are really trying to create a communal atmosphere in Santa Fe that is both functional and beautiful.”
