SANTA FE, N.M. — The blue gorilla has a name: Zubachi.

Even though it sounds like a small device used to grill zoo animals, the name actually comes from a Japanese word that refers to treating others with respect and fairness. The winners in the contest sponsored by the Railyard Stewards was submitted by Amy Stone’s fourth grade class at Acequia Madre Elementary School.

Tied for second place was Azulito from a special education class at Cesar Chavez Community School and King Kar from a third/fourth grade class at Santa Fe School for the Arts and Sciences.

The sculpture by Don Kennell will be on display in the Railyard Park at Cerrillos Road and Guadalupe Street through the end of March, so stroll on over if you haven’t visited the big guy yet.

Wonder if “Bachi” will be his nickname.
