Senate beats House by 35-29 score in legislative basketball game

For the second year in a row, the New Mexico Senate has won Roundhouse bragging rights after a victory on the hard court.

The Senate “Lobos” pulled away in the second half to defeat the House “Aggies” 35-29 in last night’s game, which was played at Santa Fe High School.

Sens. Cliff Pirtle, R-Roswell, Bill Soules, D-Las Cruces, and Howie Morales, D-Silver City, were among those lauded on the Senate floor today for their performances in last night’s game.

No major injuries were reported, and senators have been crowing on the chamber floor this morning about their big win.

“If I was a betting man, I wouldn’t have given us a chance,” said Sen. Sander Rue, R-Albuquerque. “This will be one for the ages — I don’t think we’ll ever replicate this.”

The annual game raises money for charity. In all, last night’s game raised more than $22,350 for the University of New Mexico Cancer Center.
