The New Mexico men’s soccer team opens its spring home schedule Saturday when it takes on Fort Lewis College at 10 a.m. at Robertson Field. Admission is free.
The NCAA Division II Sky Hawks were 11-8 last season, 9-5 in the RMAC. Luke and Zac Lawrence, all-state performers for La Cueva, are listed on Fort Lewis’ spring roster.
“They’re a very ambitious team with the ball, and it should be a good test,” Lobo coach Jeremy Fishbein said. “We’ve had a couple more weeks of training under our belt since our opener, and we want to get out there and test ourselves against good opponents.”
The Lobos lost 1-0 to AZ United SC of the United Soccer League in its spring opener March 7.
“We played a fully professional team that featured a bunch of former Major League Soccer players,” Fishbein said. “We lost 1-0, but for our first game as a new team, I was real happy with out cohesiveness and our spirit. Individually there were lots of good performances, and it was the first collegiate performance for a lot of our guys. You never want to lose, but we got a lot out of the game. We found out what we need to work on as the spring goes on.”
The match against Fort Lewis is the first of four remaining spring matches for UNM. The Lobos host Air Force on April 4 at 1:30 p.m. They face Denver in Taos on April 11, then take on Nebraska-Omaha in Denver on April 18.
EX-LOBOS: Right back Oniel Fisher started for Seattle Sounders FC in its 2-2 draw with Club Tijuana last week. … Riley McGovern was named to the USL team of the week as his Real Monarch team had a 0-0 draw with LA Galaxy II.
UNM WOMEN: New coach Heather Dyche’s Lobos take on Denver on April 4 at 11 a.m. at the UNM soccer complex. Their other spring home match is April 11 against Fort Lewis.
