A former Albuquerque police officer convicted of obstruction of justice in connection with tipping off a friend on a drug trafficking investigation is facing sentencing.
Brad Ahrensfield is slated Monday to be sentenced in federal court. He faces up to 20 years in prison at sentencing.
Ahrensfield was convicted in December after a second trial.
Prosecutors said Ahrensfield told a friend that his car dealership was under investigation by state and federal agents who were looking into drug sales, stolen property and related crimes. Authorities have said they had to shut down their investigation because of Ahrensfield’s actions.
KOB-TV reports (http://bit.ly/q9jY2M) that Ahrensfield’s attorney, Jason Bowles, said more than 50 people wrote letters to U.S. Judge James Parker in support of Ahrensfield, including several Albuquerque police officers.
