Mother Road Brewing Company out of Flagstaff, Ariz., is making its debut in the Land of Enchantment with special tappings and tastings as part of ABQ Beer Week.
Mother Road has partnered with Premier Distributing Company and is now distributing in the New Mexico market.
“The most exciting thing about coming into New Mexico is the craft beer scene already there,” said Alissa Marquess, Mother Road co-founder and chief strategist. “It’s our first out-of-state venture. We’re coming to a state that has an established craft beer scene and it is exciting. It is a great step for us. We are still a smaller brewery and it allows us to come to a market that suits our size as well.”
The name Mother Road has a New Mexico connection through the legendary Route 66.
“Another big reason being Mother Road, we are located on the original line of Route 66,” Marquess explained. “Our goal is to be distributed from Chicago to L.A. all along the Mother Road. New Mexico seemed to be the likely first step.”
Mother Road will have three events as part of ABQ Beer Week 2015, which kicked off Thursday, May 21, and runs through May 31. ABQ Beer Week boasts 170 events at numerous locations throughout Albuquerque, according to event organizer Marne Gaston. A full event list can be found at abqbeerweek.com.
Mother Road will hold a sampling beginning at 4 today at Jubilation Wine & Spirits, 3512 Lomas NE. It will have a special firkin tapping beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday at Nob Hill Bar & Grill. It wraps up its ABQ Beer Week events with a special firkin tapping of Mother Road’s sweet milk stout, which has cocoa nibs added to it, on Monday at Two Fools Tavern. A firkin is a small cask used to brew cask-conditioned ale.
Nob Hill Bar & Grill draft manager Thomas DeCaro chose Mother’s Road’s sour firkin for its special tapping event on Saturday.
“We’re going to have a sour from them because a lot of our beer week stuff is on the heavy side, on the dark side so I wanted a sour one,” DeCaro said.
Marquess is excited about the selection.
“We are pretty excited about the sour,” she said. “It’s our Painted Racer. This is going to be our first sour firkin. It is our Painted Racer soured in Barrel 1. The barrel has a majority strain of Brett but has some characteristics of lactobacillus and some acetobacter as well.”
