ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — America’s fallen warriors will be honored at events in and around Albuquerque today, Memorial Day.
Memorial Day, formerly known as Decoration Day, commemorates U.S. service members who have died while serving in the military.
• A Memorial Day commemoration will begin at 9 a.m. today at the New Mexico Veterans’ Memorial, 1100 Louisiana SE.
Ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. and are scheduled to conclude at noon.
Guest speakers include Medal of Honor recipient Hiroshi “Hershey” Miyamura of Gallup, who received the military’s highest award for his heroism during the Korean War; Col. Dagvin Anderson, commander of the 58th Special Operations Wing at Kirtland Air Force Base; and Albuquerque Mayor Richard J. Berry.
Events include performances of patriotic music, the parade of state flags by Kirtland Air Force Base airmen, a fallen warrior tribute and rifle salute.
The Roadrunner Convoy of the New Mexico Military Vehicle Preservation Association will display vintage military vehicles in the memorial’s parking lot.
Overflow parking will be available at Kirtland Federal Credit Union and Bank of America on Gibson SE, and shuttle buses will take participants to and from the Veterans’ Memorial.
The event is sponsored by the United Veterans Council of New Mexico, New Mexico Veteran’s Memorial Foundation, city of Albuquerque and Kirtland Air Force Base.
• A free Memorial Day barbecue for all veterans is scheduled for 1-3 p.m. at the New Mexico Veterans Integration Center, 13032 Central SE. The menu includes hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, chips, potato salad, watermelon and soda.
The city of Rio Rancho will observe Memorial Day with a parade and remembrance ceremony. The parade will start at 10 a.m., heading east from Country Club Drive down Southern Boulevard, and end at the Veterans Monument Park on Pinetree Road adjacent to the Esther Bone Memorial Library.

The town of Bernalillo is hosting a Memorial Day parade today beginning at 11 a.m. with the route running along Camino del Pueblo (from Camino Del Bosque to Loretto Park).
Following the parade, there will be a Memorial Day Ceremony at 1 p.m. at the Sandoval County Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Bernalillo at 711 Camino Del Pueblo.
