Matt Hegarty, a former Aztec football star who played three years as an offensive lineman at Notre Dame, apparently will finish his college career at Oregon.
Oregon made the announcement on its football Twitter feed. It quickly was picked up by multiple media outlets including the Associated Press and CBS Sports.
Hegarty announced in March that he was leaving Notre Dame because the Irish coaching staff wanted him to change positions — he prefers to play center and started 10 games there last season — and because the Irish have lots of young offensive linemen.
Oregon, the national championship runner-up last season, appears to be a good fit. The Ducks’ starting center, Hroniss Grasu, has graduated and was drafted by the Chicago Bears.
As a graduate transfer, Hegarty is eligible to play this fall.
Hegarty was an all-state player at Aztec High School and was a top-100 recruit.
