Wind Rider Music Fest features bands and fun at Mescalero

Celebrate the beginning of summer and Father’s Day with a road trip to Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort & Casino and Ski Apache in Mescalero.

Take in the crisp air, cooler temperatures and the gorgeous views of the Sacramento mountain range with some great music and good fun during the Wind Rider Music Fest happening June 20-21 at Ski Apache. The music festival features Matisyahu and Slightly Stoopid along with The Expendables, Stick Figure, Homegrown Boyz and Jones and Miles.

Matisyahu will headline the June 20 event. His album “Youth” was previously nominated for a Grammy Award for best reggae album. His other albums also have reached the top-10 reggae album charts. Wind Rider Music Fest guests will hear Matisyahu perform songs from his fifth album “Akeda,” according to an Inn of the Mountain Gods news release.

Slightly Stoopid will headline the June 21 event. The band formed in 1995 in Ocean Beach, Calif. Slightly Stoopid mixes rock, reggae and punk sounds, which creates a “contagious, feel-good vibe” that is its signature sound.

In addition to all the live music, the festival will feature food and beverage booths, vendors and activities such as a climbing wall and a gigantic water slide. One free gondola ride also is included in the price of the festival tickets.

Festival hours will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 20 and 21. On June 20, Homegrown Boyz will hit the stage at 11 a.m., followed by The Expendables at 1 p.m. and, later Matisyahu at 3:15 p.m. On June 21, Jones and Miles will take the stage at 11 a.m., followed by Stick Figure at 1 p.m. and then Slightly Stoopid at 3:15 p.m.

One-day passes are $55, two-day passes are $80 and children age 5 and younger are free with an adult ticket holder. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. Parking is $3. For tickets and information, visit

Overnight camping also will be available for those who want to enjoy the beautiful mountain terrain under a starry night sky. Camping passes are $10 and can be purchased at the ticket window at the event.

Inn of the Mountain Gods also has room packages available to accommodate those who prefer to stay in a luxury, indoor setting. If you plan to stay after the festival wraps up or return later this summer, take advantage of the Summer Escape package now through Aug. 27. The package includes a one-night stay Sunday through Thursday in a standard room.

The package also includes the breakfast buffet for two as well as two Inn Margaritas and one $10 appetizer at its Big Game Sports Bar, Apache Tee or Smokey B’s. Packages start at $169.

For some outdoor fun, visit the Apache Eagle ZipRider that gives you an aerial view of Inn of the Mountain Gods and its lovely Lake Mescalero. The fun 10-minute zipline trip reaches speeds of more than 30 mph over the lake. A single ride ticket is $35 for adults, $32 for children and seniors and $81 for an all day pass.

At Ski Apache, take a ride on the Apache Wind Rider ZipTour. This “adrenaline charged, heart-pounding, three-span adventure” features great views of Ski Apache at a 11,500 feet elevation. The ZipTour cruises you above the “Apache Bowl” through a ride that is more than 8,900 feet in length. Single ride tickets are $65 for adults and $58 for children and seniors.

Adult guests staying or visiting Inn of the Mountain Gods also will be able to enjoy its gaming promotions.

This month, Inn of the Mountain Gods and the Casino Apache Travel Center are in the hunting spirit and offering thousands of dollars in prizes during its “Let’s Get Wild” promotion that runs through June 25. Prizes include a 2015 Polaris Sportsman ETX, a Dodge Laramie 4×4 Crew Cab Truck and a grand prize Elk Tag worth more than $13,000, plus $5,000 cash and more.

Apache Spirit Club players earn an entry when they accrue 50 points on their players card. Drawings are held on Thursdays in June at Casino Apache with the grand prize drawing at Inn of the Mountain Gods on June 25.

Every Sunday through June 28, Apache Spirit Club members have the chance to “Spin & Win” for up to $300 cash or $500 in Free Spirit Play at Inn of the Mountain Gods. Players can earn one entry per day with 20 base points. Drawings are held every half-hour from 6-8 p.m. and winners get to spin the wheel located at the Apache Spirit Club for their prize.
