Gov. Susana Martinez responds to same-sex marriage ruling

Gov. Susana Martinez weighed in this afternoon on the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark ruling that approved same-sex marriage nationwide.

The Republican governor has previously voiced opposition to same-sex marriage, while maintaining the issue should be resolved by a citizen vote.

Here is Martinez’s statement in full:

“My personal views on this issue are well-known. And as I have said before, I wholeheartedly believe this should have been resolved by the voters through respectful deliberation within the states — not by a handful of unelected judges.

But no matter our personal views on the ruling, I am confident New Mexicans will continue to show kindness and respect toward one another, including a respect for the religious freedom of every person that has always served as a pillar of our Constitution.

I will continue my focus on issues like growing our economy and improving our schools, and I urge New Mexicans to come together as we continue our progress in these efforts.”

Meanwhile, the leaders of the state’s Democratic and Republican parties also released statements today.

Debbie Maestas, the chairwoman of the Republican Party of New Mexico, sounded a similar tone to the governor.

“This decision should have been settled democratically on a state by state basis, not by an unelected court,” Maestas said. “We as New Mexicans should respect one anther’s views, including the religious faiths of others.”

Democratic Party of New Mexico Chairwoman Debra Haaland, in a statement sent out earlier today, described the ruling as a “victory” that she shares with her daughter, Somah, who is a lesbian.

“The court’s ruling simply affirms that LGBT people deserve the same rights and protections under the law as every citizen of the United States,” Haaland said. “This is more than a partisan political issue, it is a major step forward in the fight for civil rights in our country.”

“The Democratic Party of New Mexico joins with the president in applauding this important decision,” Haaland added.
