ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The man shot and killed by a former CNN journalist at a Northwest Albuquerque motel was identified late Thursday night as Tomorio Walton, 27.

Walton has no criminal record in New Mexico, according to online state records. Albuquerque Police Department spokesman officer Tanner Tixier said Walton had absconded from parole out of Memphis, Tenn. Police don’t know how long he was in Albuquerque, Tixier said.

Police haven’t released many details about what happened in the shootout that left Walton dead in the parking lot.

Lynne Russell, former CNN anchor and TV journalism trailblazer, told the Journal that Walton tried to rob her and her husband, former CNN investigative journalist Chuck de Caro, on Tuesday night after they stopped at a Motel 6 near Coors and Iliff.

She said Walton started firing first and struck de Caro three times. He returned fire, killing Walton. Russell and de Caro have concealed carry weapons permits, she said.
