ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The National Hispanic Cultural Center is chock-full of events for the 2015-16 season, which begins on July 25.

“We never close the door to opportunities,” says Rebecca Avitia, NHCC executive director. “We want to capture the familiar and the unexpected. Our programming from the last season has surpassed our old event numbers.”

Back for a second season is the “Siembra! Latino Theater” series. The series was designed to showcase Latino theater at its best.

“The series has been remarkable and there is no other venue like ours in the U.S.,” she says. “It took some work to drum up the interest and now it’s the easiest to fill. The outpouring for Latino theater is incredible.”

This year’s season begins with “Aye No!” on July 30.

Along with the “Siembra” series, the NHCC also offers the “Chispa: Latino Music” series and the “Aliento: Latino Dance” series.

Avitia says the upcoming season has plenty of new offerings as well as some staples coming back.

Returning to the stage for dance will by Yjastros as well as Jesus Muñoz Flamenco. On the music side, Gustavo Pimentel will have a concert and the NHCC will host the ¡Globalquerque! festival.

Avitia says the NHCC used to have about 200 events per year. Last season it hosted nearly 700 events.

“The entire staff pitches in and brings these events to the center,” she says. “We’re always looking to bring in what is a diverse and interesting lineup. I was a dancer growing up and I love that we are able to host dance performances. They are near and dear to my heart.”

The “Chispa” series begins on July 25 with a performance by Eva Torrez & An All Star Cast.

Grammy Award-winning musician Gaby Moreno will be one of the many artists to perform in the National Hispanic Cultural Center’s new season.
