Construction begins on big Starbucks near Indian Pueblo Cultural Center

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Remember that jumbo Starbucks plotted for the old Albuquerque Indian School property?

It’s finally getting closer to reality.

Officials with Indian Pueblos Marketing Inc. —  the pueblo-owned corporation steering development along 12th Street near Interstate 40 —  broke ground on the new location during a ceremony Tuesday.

As you might recall, IPMI announced plans last fall to build a 4,000-square-foot Starbucks across the street from the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. It’s part of larger development plans for the area, a project called Albuquerque Indian School District.

The Starbucks will seat about 125 when including its 1,000-square-foot patio, according to Lindsay Lancaster, IPMI marketing director. It will have two indoor kiva fireplaces — including one in a community room — and another fireplace on the patio. It will also feature commissioned artwork from Native artists, Lancaster told the Journal.

The goal is to open the cafe by December, she said.

IPMI, a for-profit corporation owned by New Mexico’s 19 pueblos, will operate the Starbucks under a licensing agreement with the coffee giant. IPMI said in a news release it “will be the only freestanding Starbucks location licensed to a Native American-owned company in the United States.”

The 12th Street Starbucks joins a host of corporate Starbucks going up around the metro area. As the Journal reported last month, there are at least five other stores in various stages of development around Albuquerque.

IPMI is working with Bob Heiser and Danny Solares of Studio Southwest Architects & Klinger Constructors, LLC, according to the release.
