Sheriff’s office identifies deceased victim of alleged drunken driver

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim of a Friday night suspected drunken driving crash in which deputies said the suspect walked away with minor injuries after killing a woman with his pickup truck.

A court document filed Sunday in Metropolitan Court identifies the victim as 62 year-old Carolyn Chappel aka Carolyn Chappell. Sheriff’s deputies said 33-year-old Antonio Jeffrey slammed his Ford F-150 pickup truck into a Hyundai Sonata while traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of N.M. Highway 313 north of Roy Road.

Court documents said Jeffrey claimed not to have been drunk but investigators found a four-pack of a high-alcohol-content beer with two beers missing. Jeffrey later performed poorly on field sobriety tests, according to the documents.

The driver of the Sonata, the victim’s sister, sustained minor injuries, according to the documents.

Court records state that the crash, for which Jeffrey is facing a vehicular homicide charge, is the first criminal offense he’s been accused of. He’s being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center on a $100,00 cash or surety bond.
