HOBBS — Authorities say the man fatally shot by drug task force officers in Hobbs was wanted by police following a raid of a suspected drug house.
The Hobbs News-Sun reports (http://goo.gl/SwOhoX) Lea County Drug Task Force commander Byron Wester said Thursday that William “Wild Bill” Smith had been on the run since a drug-related raid last week.
New Mexico State Police said the 49-year-old Smith was fatally shot Wednesday by Lea County Sheriff’s deputies and a Hobbs police officer after a high-speed chase. Police say Smith was a passenger in the fleeing car.
It was not known how many times Smith was hit.
Authorities did not released names of the officers who opened fire.
It’s the fourth police shooting in eight months in Hobbs.
