Officer Involved Shooting Justified

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A Sandoval County grand jury has determined that the December 2009 fatal shooting of Keith Strickland by Rio Rancho police officer Chuck Weaver was justified.

The Bernalillo County District Attorney’s office released the information Friday. Prosecutors with the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s office presented the case to the grand jury on Thursday because of a conflict by the 13th Judicial District, which covers Sandoval County.

Weaver fatally shot Keith Strickland on Dec. 13, 2009, after Strickland threatened him and another police officer with a shotgun, according to police.

Weaver responded to a domestic dispute between Strickland, 32, and his estranged wife at her Rio Rancho home.

Strickland also had warrants for his arrest in connection with a Nov. 28, 2009, incident on charges of receiving stolen property, driving on a suspended license, eluding a police officer, careless driving and having an open alcohol container in the vehicle.
