Correction: An earlier version of this report incorrectly attributed the sex of the inmate to a jail press release. In fact, jail officials haven’t confirmed the inmate’s gender. The story has been modified to reflect this.
A person booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center on a DWI charge Saturday was found dead in a cell early Sunday, according to a jail press release.
Jail records show all females booked into the jail on DWI charges have been released, but several males booked that night on DWI charges remain in custody.
According to the press release, the person was to have been released and transported to a Downtown drop-off location about 11 p.m. Saturday, but refused to leave.
Jail officials began processing release a second time about 1:40 a.m. Sunday and conducted wellness checks as late as 2:26 a.m. and 2:40 a.m.
During a final check at 3:05 a.m., “MDC staff noticed inmate was non-responsive and medical code was called by staff,” according to the press release.
“Code Blue” CPR efforts were begun at 3:08 a.m., and kept up until 3:50 a.m., when the person was pronounced dead.
The death is being investigated by MDC staff, medical staff and the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office.
