ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Dr. Thomas Y. Ma has become the first New Mexico VA Health Care System physician to be named “Notable Biomedical Research Investigator” by the U.S. veterans affairs department.
Ma won the award for his research on the “junctions” between intestinal cells and their role in development of alcoholic liver disease and inflammatory bowel disease.
Ma is director of the Center for Cell Biology and Molecular Medicine at the Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center and the chief of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of New Mexico.
The award praised Ma for “making many seminal discoveries and introducing innovative technical advancements that have greatly impacted the research field.”
His work has been continuously funded by VA and National Institutes of Health grants since 1988.
