East Central shooting was in self-defense, police say

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Detectives found the man suspected of shooting another man in front of the Dollar General on Juan Tabo and Central SE Wednesday night, but are not filing charges against him at this time, according to a department spokesman.

“The initial investigation indicates that the shooting was self-defense,” said the spokesman, officer Tanner Tixier.

Tixier didn’t know the cause of the shooting or why it is being considered self-defense.

When officers arrived at the scene around 7:30 p.m., the suspect and victim had already left, police said.

The victim had been driven to Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital and was taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital due to the severity of his injuries, police said. Tixier said he was in stable but guarded condition Thursday afternoon.

“Due to the victim’s condition, detectives have not yet had the opportunity to interview him,” he said.

Police are not releasing the identity of either man, and Tixier said he didn’t know how old either man is.
