UNM women’s soccer falls 1-0 at Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of New Mexico women’s soccer team gave the Minnesota Golden Gophers (4-1-2) everything they could handle in Friday night’s match before falling 1-0. After giving up an early goal to the home team in the first half, UNM (2-4-0) had the better of the match throughout the second half. The Lobos created chances, including a shot off the post in the final minutes but couldn’t equalize.

The Lobos conceded an unassisted goal to Minnesota’s Maddie Gaffney 11 minutes into the match. New Mexico went into halftime down a goal despite keeping things close throughout the stat sheet. Minnesota held the advantage in shots (5-2), shots on goal (2-1) and corner kicks (5-2).

UNM stayed aggressive to open the second half and earned an early corner kick. The Lobos were unable to capitalize on the corner. New Mexico also earned the second corner of the half minutes later but ended the possession without a goal off Madisyn Olguin’s corner.

The Lobos kept at it in Minnesota’s half of the field and created a potential scoring opportunity. Dylann O’Connor took a corner kick in the 71st minute as the play was stopped due to a yellow card issued to the Gophers. On the restart, senior Alyssa Coonrod unleashed a shot that was saved by Minnesota keeper Tarah Hobbs. New Mexico nearly got the equalizer in the 85th minute, but Dylann O’Connor’s shot hit off the post.

Minnesota: (11:04) Maddie Gaffney (unassisted)

“It was a tale of two halves tonight for us. We let them dictate the game in the first half, and we gave up a pretty soft team goal. In the second half, I felt like we dictated play. It went back and forth a bit, but if we had played like that in the first half, the match may have turned out differently.” -Head coach Heather Dyche

“We hit the post twice, including once in the final couple of minutes. The second half is when we made it a game, but we had already dug ourselves a hole. It was too little too late.” -Head coach Heather Dyche
