Jordan Lesansee was a runaway winner for the Albuquerque Academy Chargers, who outran second-place Eldorado and 20 other schools on Friday in the Albuquerque Academy Cross-Country Invitational.
Academy’s depth proved to be too much for the 18-team girls field as well. While Los Alamos’ Sophia Galvez and Maddy Foley finished 1-2, the Chargers’ five scorers finished in the top 16 and scored 48 points to the Hilltoppers’ 75.
Lesansee, a junior, is the reigning 3,200-meter champion in track and field and also won the Lobo Invitational title three weeks ago. His time on Academy’s 5-kilometer course of 15 minutes, 34.94 was more than 16 seconds ahead of his rival of late, Miyamura’s Niles Thomas (15.51.47). Thomas’ time was faster than the 15:53.22 he ran in winning this event last year, when Lesansee finished as the runner-up.
Galvez (18:38.64) also won by a wide margin; Foley finished in 19:00.28. Erin Archibeck (19:12.53) ran sixth for Academy, who also had two runners in the top 30 whose tallies didn’t count in the team score.
