ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Metropolitan Detention Center has one officer for every 90 inmates, wants to improve ratio
Bernalillo County is planning to hire more than 100 new detention officers to increase inmate to staff ratios at its jail.
The county currently has only one officer for every 90 inmates held at its Metropolitan Detention Center in Albuquerque.
Deputy County Manager Tom Swisstack tells KOAT-TV that it is nearly impossible to directly supervise inmates with current staffing. The additional positions will be paid for out of the jail’s $64 million yearly budget.
The county is working with the Department of Veterans Services to encourage unemployed veterans to apply for the jobs. The jail is holding a job fair on Jan. 22.
