ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Events  planned for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Today’s vents celebrate the life of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who led the African-American civil rights movement until his assassination in 1968. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a national holiday, is celebrated today..  Today’s events include:


  • 8 a.m. — 15th annual breakfast commemorating King’s life, Marriott Pyramid Hotel, 5151 San Francisco NE. For tickets, contact Galvin Brown at 293-1300, any member of Grant Chapel or
  • Five readings from the book “Waddie Welcome & the Beloved Community” by Tom Kholer and Susan Earl, will be held at Starbucks at the following times and locations: 8 a.m., 7600 Jefferson NE; 10 a.m. 330 Tijeras NW; 12:30 p.m., 5501 Montgomery NE; 3 p.m., 170 E. Highway 550 in Bernalillo; and 6:30 p.m., 901 Rio Grande NW. For more information, visit
  • 10 a.m. — King celebration hosted by Santa Fe NAACP, Capitol Rotunda, Santa Fe.
  • 1-3 p.m. — 21 Years: Pursuing the Dream and Congregation Albert, 3800 Louisiana NE. Free admission. For more information, call 994-2335.
  • 2 p.m. — The life and dreams of King, at Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church, 4848 Huron Drive NE in Rio Rancho. The event will feature youth presentations, choirs, a video of King and speeches by the Rev. Dr. Charles Becknell Sr., president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of New Mexico and Aj Coffee, general manager of Cottonwood Mall. For more information, call 280-0232.
