Skiing: Lobo Myklebust skis 7th in giant slalom at Utah

Park City, Utah — On a day when the women took center stage at the Utah Invitational, Karoline Søvik Myklebust picked up a second straight top-10 finish, coming in seventh in the women’s giant slalom on Wednesdsay.  She was one of four Lobos in the top-20 as UNM finished fourth with 61 points in the discipline.

Myklebust was 12th after the first run, but for the second straight day, she put together a terrific second run.  This time she was sixth in the second go, moving her up to seventh and just 0.6 seconds out of fourth place.

In the slalom, UNM’s top four finishers went Myklebust, Staples, Altringer, and Ottosson and it was almost déjà vu all over again, as in the giant slalom it went Myklebust, Altinger, Staples and Ottosson.  Courtney Altringer was sitting in sixth after the first run and finished 12th, picking up 19 points.  Staples, who earned a top-10 yesterday, finished 14th to earn 17 points.  Ottosson earned a top-20 finish coming in right at 20th.

UNM’s other finisher was Taylor Grauer, who was consistent in both runs to finish 25th.  Katharine Irwin picked up a DNF in her first collegiate GS race.

The Lobos picked up 61 points on the day as most of the schools were fairly bunched up.  The total puts UNM in sixth place through three disciplines, all alpine, with the men’s giant slalom tomorrow.  The Nordic events will be run on January 10 and 11.

NOTES: Myklebust’s 54 points for the invitational gives her 324.5 for her career … Altringer is the current leader among returning alpine racers with 574.5 points … Altringer now has 33 top-20 finishes for her career … the women’s alpine squad scored 131 points, just 10 fewer than last year’s 141 in the same invitational.
