Proposal to expand three-strikes law goes before lawmakers

SANTA FE, N.M. — A proposal to expand the three-strikes law for sentencing habitual violent offenders in New Mexico is expected to go before lawmakers on Thursday.

The proposal to amend the law would add crimes to the list that make offenders with at least three violent felonies eligible for life sentences.

Rep. Paul Pacheco, an Albuquerque Republican who is sponsoring the measure, says the current three-strikes law on the books in New Mexico is so narrow that no one has been convicted under it since it was enacted two decades ago.

He is expected to testify before the House Regulatory and Public Affairs Committee on Thursday afternoon.
