Panel OKs Colorado bill on transgender birth certificates

DENVER — A Colorado House committee has passed a bill to make it easier for transgender people to change their birth certificates.

The bill would allow transgender residents to update their birth certificates to reflect their correct gender.

They could do so without getting surgery. And the new birth certificate would not be marked as “amended,” as is the case now.

The bill is sponsored by Democratic Rep. Dominick Moreno of Commerce City and passed 7-6 on Thursday. Democrats supported it and Republicans voted against it.

It now heads to the full House for consideration.

The GOP-controlled Senate rejected a similar bill last year.
