Police arrested a man in the death of a one-year-old baby at a northeast Albuquerque apartment complex Monday.
Officer Tanner Tixier, a spokesman for the Albuquerque Police Department, said Jorge Ortega, 28, was arrested after paramedics were called to the 300 block of Rhode Island NE to render aid to a small child. They couldn’t revive the child, who was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.
Detectives with the Crimes Against Children unit were investigating the death, along with the Office of the Medical Investigator, said Tixier.
He didn’t say what gender the child was.
“Due to the sensitive nature of these cases, no more information will be released at this time,” Tixier said Monday afternoon.
Maria Castillo, a neighbor, said she arrived home around 3 p.m. and the street was blocked off because of the investigation.
“I left my house at 12 o’clock and went to work,” Castillo said. “When I got home there were police all over. I figured they were looking for someone.”
Neighbors told her a baby had died, Castillo said.
She said she saw a man in his mid-20s sitting handcuffed in the back of a police car. And she said she saw what looked like a baby covered with blankets lying in the parking lot. It was not clear why the child was on the ground outside the home.
Around 4:15 p.m., Castillo said she saw investigators with the OMI take the baby away.
“To even hear that happened to a baby, it breaks my heart,” Castillo said.
Ortega had been charged with domestic violence, including battery against a household member, in 2011, but the case was dismissed, according to online court records.
