Three-run 8th sparks Lobo baseball victory

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — It wasn’t the kind of Friday night win Ray Birmingham had in mind, but the UNM baseball coach was glad to take it.

Dalton Bowers hit a tiebreaking RBI single with two outs in the eighth inning, and Jared Holley followed with a two-run double to lift New Mexico to a 9-6 win over San Jose State at Santa Ana Star Field.

UNM (11-6, 3-1 Mountain West) trailed 4-0 after two innings and 5-2 in the fifth but rallied to win for the fifth time in six games. Reliever Alex Estrella (1-0) retired all five batters he faced to earn the victory.

“You don’t want to give up six runs on Friday night to anyone,” Birmingham said, “but guys clutched up and got some big hits, and Alex Estrella was big-time. He was the hero of the game.”

Carl Stajduhar’s three-run homer highlighted a four-run fifth-inning that gave the Lobos a 6-5 lead. But a single, a balk and two wild pitches brought home the tying run for SJSU (6-11, 2-4) in the seventh.

UNM answered in the eighth, however, making a winner of Estrella.

“I usually just try to zone out when I’m pitching,” Estrella said. “But when you get a rally like that, you can’t do it. Those guys really delivered.”

Luis Gonzalez was 3-for-4 with three runs scored for UNM. Dillan Smith was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Spartans.
