Man Accused of Exposing Self

SANTA FE, N.M. — Santa Fe police Tuesday night arrested a man who they say has been exposing himself to women in the downtown area.

Sabien Byrd, 37, was taken into custody shortly after police received a call from a taxi driver, who said that he saw Byrd “expose his genitals to an elderly female,” according to Santa Fe police Lt. Louis Carlos.

The cabbie said that Byrd was wearing olive green tights, a black-hooded sweatshirt and a ski mask. The incident occurred about 9:30 p.m. near the Plaza, Carlos said.

When undercover officers approached Byrd, he took off running. The officers, with the help of a police dog, found Byrd hiding behind some bushes near Garrett’s Desert Inn, 311 Old Santa Fe Trail. Byrd was then taken into custody on a misdemeanor charge of resisting or obstructing an officer, according to Carlos.

Police will now investigate Byrd’s alleged indecent exposure from Tuesday, as well as try to determine whether he is the same person who has been performing similar lewd acts downtown in recent months.

Carlos said that police have received about five reports over the last couple months “of someone who meets his description” exposing himself.

“He will approach women, ages vary, and expose his genitalia and run away,” Carlos said.

The lieutenant added, “We believe there’s a lot more victims out there, but they have not come forward.”

Police are encouraging other possible victims to contact Santa Fe police Det. Tony Trujillo at 955-5038.
