Class 4A baseball: Sandia Prep dominates, repeats

It wasn’t perfect this time around, but that was still fine.

Joe Martinez and Sandia Prep will take a two-hit shutout any day, especially this day.

The junior lefty dominated in the Class 4A state baseball championship game for the second year in a row as the top-seeded Sundevils routed No. 2 Portales 13-0 on Saturday afternoon at Santa Ana Star Field.

“It feels just as great,” Martinez said. “I didn’t want to go out and try to match my last performance, but I definitely just wanted to win and go back to back. It just feels awesome sending our seniors out with this win.”

Martinez allowed just two singles, did not walk a batter and struck out three over his seven innings of work. That followed up last year’s perfect game in the finale.

“Joe has been fabulous, back-to-back big games for us,” Sandia Prep coach Paul Huitt said. “He set the tempo, and they made some mistakes early. He’s fun to watch.”

Martinez gave up a two-out single to Chris Aranda in the second and then got Draven Saiz to pop up to end that inning. Jacob Salgado had a two-out single in the third, followed by Joe Ortega popping up to end that frame.

“I just like to work fast, be out there for as little as I can,” Martinez said. “So I work as fast as I can.”

Sandia Prep finished the year 27-4 and has gone 80-12 over the past three seasons, Huitt said, winning back-to-back titles after losing in the championship game to Silver in 2014. That was also the Sundevils’ last loss against a team in their classification. Even the four losses this year were all to teams from outside New Mexico.

“This group, they’ve been playing lights out,” Huitt said. “It’s a pretty amazing feat.”

Portales (23-7) needed to play near-perfect baseball to beat Sandia Prep. Instead, the Rams kicked the ball all over the field for a staggering seven errors. Almost every error led to one or more runs for the Sundevils.

“First, respect for them, that’s a great team, but we were able to capitalize,” Sandia Prep catcher Andrew Einhorn said. “That was the big thing.”

The Sundevils got on the board in the second inning. Sean Jarvis’ two-out single and a walk to Marshall Grandjean set the table. Back-to-back throwing errors by pitcher Salgado and second baseman Aranda led to three runs.

“If a team messes up, we’re going to make them pay,” Martinez said. “That was our mentality for the day.”

Sandia Prep added two runs in the fourth, two in the sixth and capped it off with a six-run outburst in the seventh.

Mike Snow went 4-for-5 with two RBIs, while Daniel Stell was 2-for-5 with three RBIs for the Sundevils.
