Child injured in hit-and-run now stabilized at hospital, police say

A boy crossing Central late Saturday with his grandmother was struck and injured by a vehicle that fled the scene, according to police.

Officer Simon Drobik said the 4-year-old boy, initially listed in critical condition, is now in stable condition at a local hospital.

Police said the boy and his grandmother were not using a crosswalk as they walked across Central near Rio Grande.

A tan car, which may have been a Toyota Corolla or Camry, struck the boy and fled the scene, Drobik said.

He said if caught, the driver could face felony charges for leaving the scene of an accident. He said the pedestrians were in the wrong for not using a crosswalk.

“The irony is if the vehicle would have stayed they wouldn’t have been in trouble,” Drobik said.
