Few local candidates can boast of support from a Democratic billionaire.
But George Soros, the philanthropist who pours millions into liberal causes, donated $107,000 to a political action committee that’s backing Raúl Torrez in the Democratic primary for district attorney in New Mexico’s largest county.
Torrez, who has worked as a local, state and federal prosecutor, faces Edmund Perea, a lawyer and former police officer.
The Soros-backed political action committee, which calls itself New Mexico Safety & Justice, reported spending about $93,000 on media buys and production to support Torrez. It also spent some money on polling.
Soros is its only contributor — and the PAC is the only group or candidate in New Mexico he has contributed to this year, according to state campaign records.
Torrez already had an enormous financial advantage. His campaign has reported $354,000 in contributions and Perea has reported about $92,000.
The Torrez campaign said it isn’t affiliated with or coordinating with the PAC.
