A man suspected of breaking into a car at Sportsman’s Warehouse fled and caused a serious crash after officers used a spike belt to try to stop the man’s vehicle near Bridge and Broadway, according to police.
APD spokesman Tanner Tixier said officers were called to the Sportsman’s Warehouse near Montaño and Renaissance NE around 10:30 a.m. Thursday because a man allegedly broke into a victim’s car and took multiple things, including a rifle case.
A police helicopter followed the suspect across the city and officers put out a spike belt at Bridge and Isleta.
“The vehicle continued to flee and caused a serious accident at Bridge and Broadway,” Tixier said. He didn’t say how many people were injured or how serious those injuries were.
The suspect — later identified by police as 29-year-old Corderro Jefferson — tried to run away but was arrested. He is facing charges for auto burglary and aggravated eluding of law enforcement, along with a felony warrant for an aggravated assault arrest, Tixier said.
