APD: Woman’s death in SE ABQ not suspicious, nearby naked man arrested on other charges

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — When southeast Albuquerque patrol officers found a naked man waving his arms in the parking lot of an apartment complex Saturday, they went into the complex’s patio area to try to find someone who knew him.

What they found instead was surprising.

A woman was lying on the ground unconscious in front of an apartment. Paramedics could not revive her and she was pronounced dead.

Despite the suspicious nature of the scene they came across, officers have since determined that the woman likely died of natural causes and was not the victim of foul play. They are waiting for an autopsy to confirm that.

MITCHELL: Charged with indecent exposure

The allegedly naked man, 27-year-old Dante Mitchell, was arrested on felony charges of aggravated indecent exposure. Police say he had nothing to do with the woman’s death.

“We have no proof that these two incidents are related in any way,” Albuquerque police spokesman Tanner Tixier said.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court, a woman arrived at her apartment complex on the 300 block of Charleston SE with her four children around 9 p.m. Saturday and saw Mitchell in the parking lot.

“The children saw Dante naked and stated ‘Why is that guy naked,’ and said ‘Why is he doing that?'” an officer wrote in the complaint. The woman drove away and called police.

Once they arrived, Mitchell did not respond to officers’ questions, so they went looking for someone who knew him and stumbled across the unconscious woman. Officers cleared her apartment, which they said was clean, with one plant knocked over. There was a bottle of whiskey on the table, according to the complaint. It’s unclear if alcohol was a contributing factor in her death.

Officers immediately detained Mitchell and he was later booked into the county jail on the aggravated indecent exposure charge, where he remained Monday evening.
