Geronimo Exhibit To Open at Phoenix Museum

PHOENIX (AP) — A Phoenix museum is bringing together collections from across the country to tell the story of a legendary Apache warrior.

Geronimo was known for the fierce fighting he brought on during the Arizona Indian Wars of the 19th century.

Some of Geronimo’s personal possession, including moccasins, a bow and quiver will be on display starting Feb. 11 at the Heard Museum.

The exhibit, “Beyond Geronimo: the Apache Experience” runs through January 2013 and also includes photographs, paintings and other artifacts.

The exhibit is a mix of collections from the Heard Museum, the Autry National Center, private lenders, the Smithsonian and other institutions.

Geronimo was captured in 1886 and spent the rest of his life as a prisoner of war. He died of pneumonia in 1909 at Fort Sill in Oklahoma.
