The Farmington Daily Times reports that at least half the public money spent by the county’s indigent health care program has gone toward treating alcohol and drug addictions.
Liza Gomez, the program’s coordinator, says the county spent $888,000 of gross receipts taxes to treat indigent patients in 2008.
It spent $2.1 million as part of the program in 2011.
The county spent between $1 million and $1.4 million to treat indigent people in 2005 to 2007.
Thirty percent of adults living in San Juan County lack health insurance.
That’s higher than the state rate of 26 and the national rate of 17.
