Genesis to offer behavioral health for UNM patients

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Genesis HealthCare, an operator of skilled nursing facilities in New Mexico, will offer post-hospitalization care to University of New Mexico Health System patients with a strong emphasis on behavioral health services.

The two institutions on Friday announced the collaboration, which will include the opening of a 26-bed behavioral health unit in St. John Healthcare Rehabilitation Center in Albuquerque. UNM physicians will provide psychiatric services at the new unit, which is expected to open later this year.

“After discharge from UNM Hospital, many of our patients are admitted to follow-up skilled nursing facilities like Genesis for continued care,” said Dr. Michael Richards, physician-in-chief of the UNM Health System. Some patients treated for pulmonary, cardiac or stroke conditions at UNM also have behavioral health issues and require specialized care once they are discharged, he said.

Genesis is one of many skilled nursing centers treating UNM patients following hospitalization in the metro area.

“We are confident that by collaborating with UNM specialists, we will further improve patient outcomes and prevent unnecessary re-hospitalizations,” said Dave Almquist, president of the company’s west division.

In addition to behavioral health, Genesis and UNM are working to develop programs in the areas of orthopedics, pulmonary, cardiac and neurology care at select Genesis centers throughout the state. Genesis operates 19 skilled nursing facilities in New Mexico, 10 of which are in the Albuquerque area.
