Aggie men’s 2016-17 hoops schedule unveiled

LAS CRUCES – New Mexico State head men’s basketball coach Paul Weir unveiled the 2016-17 @AggieArmy schedule on Wednesday that features 17 home games while also returning to the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho to play Northern New Mexico.

Aggie fans will get their first look at the team under the direction of the first year head coach at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 11 at the Pan American Center when New Mexico State entertains Arizona Christian in its home and season opener.

New Mexico State faces its first test on the road when it travels to Ft. Collins, Colo., to square off against Colorado State on ROOT Sports Network. The Rams went 18-16 last season and 12-5 when playing at Moby Arena.

Weir and company then return home for a 7 p.m. tipoff against Samford on Wednesday, Nov. 16, as part of the University of San Diego Classic. Two days later, the Aggies travel three hours north to square off against Battle of I-25 rival New Mexico in a 7 p.m. tip-off game on Friday, Nov. 18.

New Mexico State then hosts Bethune Cookman on Sunday, Nov. 20, and Nicholls State on Nov. 22 before flying to sunny San Diego, Calif., to battle the Torreros of San Diego in the final game of the University of San Diego Classic.

The Aggies wrap up the first month of play at the Pan American Center when they host Air Force on Nov. 30 for a 7:30 tip. Later that week, Long Beach State comes to town to complete the home-and-home series on Saturday, Dec. 3. NM State looks to return the favor this year after falling to the Falcons in overtime and the Beach on the road.

A big rivalry weekend begins for New Mexico State on Saturday, Dec. 10, when the Lobos come to the Pan American Center for an 8 p.m. tip before the Aggies travel to Battle of I-10 rival UTEP on Dec. 13.

New Mexico State then heads west on I-10 for a 6 p.m. game against Arizona State at Wells Fargo Arena on the Pac-12 Networks. The Aggies then return home to host UC Irvine on Dec. 19 before taking a short break for Christmas. Eastern New Mexico then comes to town on Dec. 27 followed by UTEP on Dec. 30 at 7 p.m. before New Mexico State opens Western Athletic Conference play in the new year.

The Aggies begin conference play on the road beginning on Jan. 5 before returning home for a pair of crucial conference match-ups against Grand Canyon (Jan. 12) and CSU Bakersfield (Jan. 14). NM State will have extra incentive against the ‘Runners after falling to CSUB at the WAC Championship match on buzzer beater.

UMKC concludes the three-game homestand for NM State when the ‘Roos come to the Pan American Center on Jan. 21. The Aggies then hit the road once again to face Seattle U (Jan. 26) and Utah Valley (Jan. 28).

New Mexico State returns to the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho when it hosts its second neutral floor match against Northern New Mexico in as many years before hosting Chicago State (Feb. 4).

A three-game road swing then starts at CSUB (Feb. 9) followed by stops at Grand Canyon (Feb. 11) and UT Rio Grande Valley (Feb. 18). The Wolverines then make the return trip to Las Cruces on Feb. 23 followed by Seattle U on Feb. 25.

The Aggies then conclude the regular season at home on March 4 against UTRGV before heading to Sin City for the Western Athletic Conference Tournament (March 9-11) at Orleans Arena.
